Gate 10 · The Way One Walks

Gate 10 sits in the G Centre, the seat of identity and direction, and it is the busiest gate in that centre: three channels leave from it. Ten–twenty runs up to the Throat, the Awakening, the self made audible in the present tense. Ten–thirty-four runs down to the Sacral, Exploration, conviction with an engine behind it. Ten–fifty-seven runs across to the Spleen, Perfected Form, the body knowing how to move before the mind has explained the step. Three exits, one current: behavior.

Conduct is the argument. There is no other one.

The I Ching calls hexagram 10 Lǚ, Treading. Heaven stands above the lake, and the image the commentaries keep returning to is a foot set on the tiger’s tail, the walker unbitten because the manner of the walking is exact. Nothing about the tiger has changed. Everything rests on how one steps.

Practitioners read this gate as love of one’s own nature, where love means loyalty rather than admiration: the willingness to go on behaving as yourself in a room that would prefer you behaved as it. Carried well, identity and conduct become the same object, and a person’s bearing states their belief before they open their mouth. Carried badly, the mechanism inverts into a self assembled out of other people’s manners, every gesture correct, none of them answerable to anyone inside.
