Profile 3 / 6 · The Martyr over the Role Model

A profile is two numbers, the line of the personality Sun over the line of the design Sun, and the system reads it as the costume a life wears, not a verdict on the one who wears it. Here the personality line is the third, the Martyr, and the design line beneath it is the sixth, the Role Model. Because the personality line is the smaller number, the bodygraph files this as a right angle: a life the system reads as largely turned inward, personal destiny, the self worked out mostly on the self.

The third line sits at the top of the lower trigram in every hexagram, the rung where the inner world meets the outer and the footing gives way. The I Ching keeps warning it: the officer who advances and stumbles, the bond made and broken. Practitioners read the Martyr as discovery by collision, knowledge that only counts once it has been got wrong in the body. The sixth line is the top line of the figure, the sage who has run the whole hexagram through and watches from above it.

Carrying both takes the better part of a life. The system holds that the sixth line moves through three phases: a first third that crashes and tests like any third line, a long stretch on the roof observing, then a descent in the last third as the example others read. The gift is an authority no one can argue with, because every word of it was paid for. The shadow is mistaking the roof for the finish, wisdom hoarded above a life it never climbed back down into.
