Profile 4 / 1 · The Opportunist over the Investigator

The bodygraph reads a profile as two numbers: the line of the conscious Sun set over the line of the design Sun, the design side computed for the body about three months before birth. Here it is the fourth line over the first, the Opportunist carried by the Investigator.

Both numbers ride the same six-step ladder the I Ching climbs up every hexagram, base to top. The first line is the foundation, the bottom yao, the root that has to reach bedrock before anything above it will stand. Its instinct is to dig: read the whole thing, test the floor, refuse to move until the footing is known. The fourth line is the base of the upper trigram, the place where a hexagram turns from inside to outside. The system reads it as the line of the network: influence that travels through friendship, the next thing arriving by way of someone already trusted. Its ground is the bond, and it rarely leaps toward a stranger.

The one profile the system reads as a fixed fate.

Every other profile the bodygraph sorts onto a right or a left angle, an arc bent toward a personal or a transpersonal life. The 4/1 is the one it files on its own: a juxtaposition, the single fixed fate among the twelve. The reason sits in the two lines. Both are already fixed, the first anchored to its foundation and the fourth to its bonds, so there is almost no give between them. Practitioners hold that a 4/1 is hard to talk out of its own direction, and that its openings have to come through hands it already knows.

The gift is a base that does not wobble and a friendship that does not flinch. The shadow is the same wall turned inward, a course that stays its heading long after the ground has changed. It builds on stone, and it will not step off.
