D60 · Ṣaṣṭyāṁśa
The whole chart summed once more, and the karma carried in from before.
Reading
Of all the divisions, the ṣaṣṭyāṁśa cuts finest. A varga remaps each fraction of a sign onto a new sign to isolate one theme; the sixtieth isolates, in effect, the theme of everything, the sum of the chart read once more at the smallest scale, and with it the karma carried in from before this life.
It divides the sign into sixty parts of half a degree each, counted from the sign itself. At that fineness a few minutes of birth time swing a planet from one sixtieth to the next, which is why it asks for an accurate hour. Even so, the Parāśara tradition weighs it heavily, treating a planet’s ṣaṣṭyāṁśa as a strong word on how its whole promise finally lands.
The tradition reads the sixtieth as past-life karma, held, not proven.
Because the claim is past lives, the register stays careful. The school holds that the chart carries an unpaid balance forward and that this division shows its finest tuning; it does not tell a person who they were. Read the sixtieth as the last adjustment laid over everything else in the chart, and stop the claim where the tradition stops it.
