Two motor centres, wired end to end. Gate 39 sits in the Root, the body’s pressure floor, and its work is provocation: it sets an obstruction in the path and waits to see who still has the spirit to feel it. Gate 55 sits in the Solar Plexus, the emotional motor, the wave that swells to full and draws back on a rhythm no decision can hurry. The channel of Emoting runs the first into the second, so pressure comes out as mood.

Pressure that will not let the feeling sleep.

The I Ching sets the register. Hexagram 39 is Jiǎn, Obstruction: water resting on the mountain, an abyss ahead and a steep climb behind, the old counsel to stop pushing and turn inward while the road stays shut. Hexagram 55 is Fēng, Abundance, thunder standing over lightning, the image of the sun at noon. Set the two together and you have the mechanics of a feeling: a pressure that leans on the wave, a fullness that answers with everything it has, then ebbs, because a sun at its zenith has already begun to set.

The system reads this as emotional provocation, the friction that pokes a numb feeling back to life and asks whether the appetite for spirit is still there. Carried well, it is depth felt on purpose, someone who can raise the temperature of a room and mean every degree of it. Run without care, the same current sets stones where no crossing was needed and broods on a passing low as though it were the last word on a life.

The tradition holds the wave as weather, something to feel all the way through and never to settle in the heat of. The obstruction is the question. The wave is the body’s answer, and it will not be hurried.

Where it rhymes

The same archetype, spoken in other systems.
