Bhadra · Mercury strong in an angle

Bhadra is the Mercury form of the Pancha Mahāpuruṣa yogas. It forms when Mercury holds one of his own signs, Gemini or Virgo, and stands in a kendra from the ascendant. Virgo does double duty here: Mercury both rules and exalts in it, so a Mercury there is dignified twice over.

The tradition reads Bhadra as a potential for a quick, supple mind: intellect, eloquence, a gift for language, numbers, and trade, and the adaptability to shift its register to fit the room. Classical texts describe a learned, well-spoken native. It marks a capacity for skill, not a guarantee of what gets done with it.

Mercury’s particular hazard is the Sun. He orbits close and is often combust, and a deeply burnt Mercury mutes the yoga even when the sign is right, so the tradition asks specifically that he not sit too near the Sun. Add the usual conditions, unafflicted, dignified, brought forward in his daśā, and note that Bhadra is not rare. Its own signs plus a kendra fall together often enough that it counts among the more common of the five. Presence marks a doorway; the daśā decides whether anyone walks through.
